With the world on the brink of destruction, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and his fate to save millions of Jews from genocide. Niemoeller actor August Diehl previously played an SS Gestapo officer in Άδωξοαρρτξοάι (2009) and a German citizen who resisted enlisting in the German army in Μια κρυφή ζωή (2019).
Protests or force cannot touch it. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be believed – of course, a fool can resist them by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can simply be ignored as trivial exceptions.
However, the film devoted an inordinate amount of time to Bonhoeffer’s 1930 trip to New York and his supposed fascination with gospel music and jazz. In fact, his later prison letters reveal the lasting influence of traditional Lutheran chorales and Paul Gerhardt’s hymns on his theology and piety.
He made no mention of his engagement to Maria von Wedemeyer (eighteen years his junior), with whom he exchanged dozens of letters during his imprisonment (1943-1945) and later published as ‘Love Letters from Cell 92.’ Maria’s grandmother financed the Confessing Church seminary in Finkenwalde, where Bonhoeffer advocated a kind of “new monasticism”; for seminaries – with traditional chorales and a prescribed prayer of the Psalms. A plot that weaved through the end of Marian Bonhoeffer’s life would have raised compelling questions like: Why get engaged if your world is about to end?
