When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the most secret and ancient events in the world—the election of a new pope—he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions that Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals take during the conclave depicted in the film are in keeping with Catholic faith and centuries-old tradition. Upon the Pope’s death, his ring (known as the Fisherman’s Ring) is removed and destroyed to prevent it from being used to forge the papal seal on documents. The Vatican officially declares the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) vacant.
The College of Cardinals is confined to their apartments (Domus Sanctae Marthae, House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. Finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections and voting take place, are blacked out, closed and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave. Some of the latest security measures implemented in everyday life are also on display: When the Sistine Chapel was searched for hidden microphones and other electronic listening devices during the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis I, all conclave participants were issued servant identification cards because a reporter disguised as a servant was discovered during the 2005 conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI, all members of the College of Cardinals were required to surrender their cell phones and other electronic devices, the Vatican’s Wi-Fi network was temporarily turned off, and wireless signal blocking devices were installed in the Sistine Chapel. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melquiades, 311-314 AD), and Gelasius I (492-496 AD).
Lawrence: Our faith is a living thing precisely because it goes hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. Let us pray that God will give us a Pope who doubts. And may He give us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and who moves on.

With a few twists and turns, this kind of labyrinthine plot continues wherever the quest for power and control is present. The lead actors – Fiennes, Tucci, Lithgow, Rossellini and Msamati – give excellent performances and this film is worth watching for that alone.
The set pieces also play their part and, given the scale, add gravitas and authenticity rather than just background. Having said all that and without giving anything away, the ending felt strained and didn’t really fit in with the rest of the film. The message, while well-intentioned to some extent, unnecessarily undermined the structure of the rest of the film – it felt simplistic and trendy. It’s a shame because if this part of the film had been given as much attention as the rest, the film would have been better.
