The promotion for the film didn’t lie to you. This is a film that is truly one of the most unique concepts we’ve seen in a long time. The film relies on enjoying the single camera/location fixation and telling the story of the effects of time on life and the people who move through it. Zemeckis accomplished this task on many levels and was able to use the space well and keep the shot dynamic despite the static. Dynamic scene changes make this piece exciting as the idea of ​​changing furniture is an impressive feature of the house itself and serves as a metaphorical window into life. I enjoyed seeing the occupants of this room and the families who called the mansion home and seeing how their interactions, auras and personalities shed a different light on the scene and tell their own micro stories. The transitions were done with the outlines of the photos, grabbing attention before moving into a new scene. The technique is fluid and rarely over the top for me. It had many creative aspects that never lost their realistic touch, making this a nice, balanced piece. As far as the story and acting go, the roster of talent helped bring this film to life and achieve its goal of being a blockbuster. Look at life. Here’s a film that relies heavily on relevance, and a cast that brings that relevance to life. When it comes to stories, they rarely come from people living their lives by taking bits and pieces from different eras and transposing them into the era. The highs and lows are beautifully captured on screen, and Zemeckis’ vision helps drive home the concepts and hit you with the emotional impact this film promised. Being touched by the stories in question only strengthened my connection to the film and I found myself thinking about what this film could teach me. The acting is there to give words to the visions and much of the dialogue is poetic but not overly Shakespearean. Bethany was a surprise and while it wasn’t as engaging and dynamic as his Disney films, it still surprised me with the boomer generation’s brilliance in the face of the rapid changes the world is experiencing. Wright’s return to the screen is fierce as her character is torn between fun and madness. It’s an excellent portrayal of the struggles so many have faced in her place during the great decades of change. Hank is, of course, as talented as ever, incorporating elements of his other characters into every moment of his life and doing so with the same class and energy he almost always displays on screen. It’s the chemistry that works, that familial atmosphere feels so natural and almost authentic, with strong clues that drive the characters forward and never fall into Hollywood tropes.
